Inspiration Station

Image: What Makes You Smile?

The past few weeks I have been talking about some of the changes that have been happening at Debi Payne Designs. One of the things is all the renovation that has been going on in my Zazzle stores. This week I have been working in my Inspiration Store and I have to say, “I just love this store”!!! The designs along with all the bright colors and the sayings all just make me smile!

I created this store about six years ago. That was also shortly after I started my focused journey into positive thinking. It seemed like every day I was running across a positive quote or saying that I really liked. I would write down the quote or saying on a sticky note and then I would stick the note to the edge of my computer monitor or on the wall around my desk. I was putting up all these little sticky notes to remind myself to stay in a positive frame of mind.

After several months I realized that I was sitting in a sea of sticky notes. I was surrounded by them and they were literally everywhere. It had gotten to the point where there were so many I wasn’t really seeing any of them. Each and every sticky note was important to me but it just wasn’t working anymore and I knew I needed to find a better way. Then one day when I was working on my Debi Payne Designs Zazzle store it dawned on me, why now take all these quotes and sayings and combine it with my art and make products that I can use every day, like a mousepad, a coaster, a keyring, a magnet, etc… etc… and that way I can still surround myself with my little reminders and enjoy them even more. That is when Inspiration Station was born!

I found that once I started creating art to go with the positive saying, the saying then became more of a visual to me. For those that study positive thinking they say that if you can connect a visual something to a thought it sticks with your longer. I have to say that I do believe it!

Since I first started Inspiration Station I have continued to build up this store. At this time there is over 13,000 products in Inspiration Station. Some products contain positive sayings and some consist of just a single positive word. In both cases these products are all little reminders that you can use throughout your day to stay in a positive frame of mind.

I hope you will take a minute to stop by Inspiration Station and see all the great products that are there. You can go to the product category to select the product you like and then from the product category you can select the design that you would like to have. You can start building a positive environment with small inexpensive products like a magnet or a keyring. My personal favorite product is my mousepad because I am at my computer most of the day and I am constantly looking at it.

I have found that since I started using these products with positive sayings my world has totally changed, all for the better. I find myself calmer, more peaceful and my focus on my work has become unbelievable lazar like. Start adding positive products to your environment and I think you will see the same thing happen for you.

A Year Long Journey: Stories from My Art Book

Image of book front cover of "Don't Give Up!"

At the beginning of this year I published my first art book. This book is a collection of my watercolor paintings accompanied by a story from my life and personal experience from my journey on being an artist. I’m excited to share this with you over the next year.

So, over the next 52 weeks I am going to be sharing a story from each chapter of the book. I hope that you will join me each week as I share a different painting and story.

I hope that these stories will serve as inspiration and motivation for those on their own personal journey as artist or whatever avenue you have chosen or are currently own.

Don’t Give Up!

Every project that I create is special to me, however from time to time I create a project that is really extra special to me. This is one of those very extra special projects that I am really excited about and proud of.

I have created many watercolor paintings with sayings that I have posted on Facebook and Instagram. For this project I wanted to take 50 of these paintings and put them into a book. I also wanted to tell a story about my life and my art career that pertained to the saying in the painting.

Cover & Open Book

Each painting is a full page image. On the opposing page is the story that I have written. Many of the stories are about experiences that I have gone through in starting my art career. Other stories are simple lessons that I have learned in my life.

My greatest hope is that through this book I could give other artist just starting their career hope and courage to push forward and make it happen.

Don't Give Up Book Cover

In the beginning, I wasn’t really sure about writing this book. However, as I got into writing the stories I found myself enjoying it so much as I relived the individual moments of my life.

I hope that those that read the book enjoy the stories. My greatest hope is that at least one person finds a tiny spark of inspiration or motivation to keep them moving toward their own individual dream.

The book is available on Amazon. To see the book, click here.

Every Day

Detail Close Up #1

We have all had what seems to be a bad day. One of those days that seem to last forever. One of those days that seem to never end.

Detail Close Up #2

Actually our days are never filled with bad things or good things. Our days are simply made up of ‘things’. How we perceive these ‘things’ will determine if they are bad or good.

Even if our day is filled with things that we perceive as bad, there is always something good in that day. We just have to allow ourselves to see the good.

Next time you are having what you perceive to be a “bad” day, take a minute to find something good. I promise, it is there, you just have to take the time to see. When you do, celebrate the good and the bad want see so bad!

Define Your History

Detail Close Up #1

One of the things that I think about a lot is, “what am I leaving behind?” By this I mean, when I am dead and gone what have I done in my life time will remain in this world once I am gone.

Once I was asked what I wanted to do with my life. My answer was, “I want to create something that when I die little pieces of me will be left all over the world.” That is exactly what I am doing with my art!

Detail Close Up #2

When I am gone from this Earth, people will still have my art. They will still have my stories. Every day I am writing my own history.

“Define Your History” by Debi Payne Designs

We all have a history. We all have the same opportunity to write our own history. Either we can write our history while we are alive or we can let other people write our history after we are gone.

Personally, I prefer to tell my own story rather giving somebody else the opportunity to tell their version of my story.

What are you doing to define or tell your history?

Drama All Around

Detail Close Up #1

I must admit, I don’t like drama! What strikes me funny is how many people say that they don’t like drama, but they are the ones in the middle of it and stirring it up.

Detail Close Up #2

I have gone to a movie, paid for a ticket, went in, sat down and started watching the movie. I didn’t like the movie, so I got up and walked out. I am the same way when it comes to drama.

When drama is all around me… I leave! You can leave too!!! You really do not have to participate in the drama around you. Next time drama is all around you, walk away!

Don’t Tell Me

Detail Close Up #1

Have you ever told somebody that you wanted to do something only to have them give you the long list of all these reasons you shouldn’t? They can tell you every worst case scenario as if it is based on fact and there is no other option.

Detail Close Up #2

I call these people “dream stealers”. Dream stealers like to tell other people how to live their lives based on how they perceive life and the world.

"Don't Tell Me" by Debi Payne Designs

Just because those people can’t perceive anything beyond their believe system doesn’t mean that you have to too.

Don’t tell me that the sky is the limit when there are footprints on the moon!

Bazillion Chances

Detail Close Up #1

How many times have you said, “if I just had a chance….”? Chances are, you have said it many times. We all have!

Detail Close Up #2

Let’s say you decide you would like to have a cupcake. So you go to a bakery. You first look at all the beautiful cupcakes on display. The clerk ask you if they can help you. You tell the clerk that you would like to have a strawberry cupcake. The clerk tells you that they are out of strawberry cupcakes. Now, do you choose a different flavor or do you just leave without any cupcake?

"Bazillion Chances" by Debi Payne Designs

“Bazillion Chances” by Debi Payne Designs

Life is kind of like a bakery. Just because the life doesn’t offer you strawberry, it still have lots of other choices. All you have to do is pick a different flavor. Chances or it will be just as good. Sometimes you just might find that it is even better! The important thing is to choose! Which is also sometimes the most difficult thing to do.

Already Different

Already Different - Detail Close Up #1I am often asked if my work is “hand” or if it is “digital”.  The short answer is… both.

Detail Close Up #2

My work always starts out by my drawing a design on a piece of paper so I can work out the layout and how I want it to look.

From there I either finish the piece by painting it with watercolor and calling it “finished”.  Or I take the layout drawing and scan it.  Once the piece is scanned in I re-draw it digitally using a Wacom tablet and pin, which keeps the drawing a “hand drawing”.

After I have redrawn the design I digitally paint the design.  I have many times been accused of using filters and gradients to add color.  Actually, I never use filters and gradients.  When I paint with watercolor  on paper I use a brush to paint with.  When I add color digitally, I use a tablet and pin/stylus.  In both cases, weather I am using a brush or a pin/stylus, my hand technique is the same.

“Already Different” by Debi Payne Designs

For years I looked for a way to make my art style different from everybody else and truly unique to me.  One day I realized that the more I tried to make my art different, the more it was looking like everybody else.  That was when I realized that I didn’t have to try to be different… because I already was!

Since making that discovery, I have enjoyed my art more than ever before!

Embrace all the way that you are different and instead of trying to change them… embrace and enjoy them!!!

You Do What You Believe In

GrassCloseup

One day I heard somebody say that we only do what we believe in.  When I heard that statement I had to stop and think about it for a minute.

FlowerCloseup

After thinking about it for a just a minute, I realized how true this statement really was.  Many people have dreams of what they want, yet they do nothing to move themselves closer to making that dream to come true.

"What You Believe In" by Debi Payne of Debi Payne Designs

“What You Believe In” by Debi Payne of Debi Payne Designs

By their lack of action they really are saying that to don’t believe in their dream.

What is your dream?  What are doing to make that dream come true?  If you aren’t doing anything, then perhaps it is because you don’t believe in your dream.  If you believe in your dream, then get busy and make it happen.
