When I was a very young child, from the time I first started walking until I was in the 7th grade I remember having to wear orthopedic shoes with metal plates in the shoes.  I’m not really sure why I had to wear these shoes and the braces but I do remember how much I hated them.

The metal braces made calices on the sides of my feet that remained as scares well into my adult life.  The shoes were big and heavy and most of all they were ugly.  On top of that they were very expensive.  Our family never had a lot of money but my parents always made sure that I had these corrective shoes.  One thing I can say about these shoes is that they were certainly durable.  They were as tough as an army tanker and there was nothing you could do to destroy them or wear them out.  However, as children do, I would outgrow them.

Everyday these were the shoes that I wore to school and to play in.  On Sundays my mother would let me wear pretty shoes to church, but when we got home, it was back to my ugly shoes.

When I was in the seventh grade the doctor finally said that I didn’t have to wear the corrective shoes anymore.  That was a very happy day for me!!!

My mother and I went shopping to buy my first real pair of everyday shoes.  I will never forget those shoes.  They were red Keds canvas shoes.  They were so beautiful and I loved them.  The next day I wore my new shoes to school.  I remember feeling so happy and I was so proud of my new red shoes!  For the first time in my life I was wearing shoes like all the other girls.  I didn’t have to be ugly and different any more.

Perhaps it was those days that inspired me to create a collection of whimsical crazy shoes.  Everyday I wore those ugly shoes I would daydream of the day when I could wear cute, fashionable shoes that were cute and fun.  To this day I still don’t have very many pairs of shoes.  Yet with my Sassy Shoe collection I can have all the fun and happy shoes that I want!
